Things to look out for in Gerbil Cages
For all those who have gerbils, it is necessary that you get the right kind of cage for this animal. All the good gerbil cages have some necessary qualities which go a long way to ensure the safety and relaxing atmosphere for the gerbil. When you are able to get these features in place, it is a good idea to get the best form of treatment and proper care so that the gerbil cages can last for a very long time.
The location of the gerbil cages is very critical. A good location would be one which is not too near to a heat source and is also out of direct sunlight. You would want your gerbil cage in a location where the interior of the cage is going to remain at a reasonably constant temperature. It should not become excessively hot because of the rays of the sun or even heat from another source. It should also not be near a source of regular noise like a television or even a secluded part of the house.
In order to ensure that your gerbils, are always exercising which is a good thing for them, you should use climbing materials like rocks, ladders and pieces of wood. You should however avoid the use of plastics. If you are interested in an exercise wheel, you should go in for one that is solid and is without any spokes as these can often cause injuries. You should always note that some of the gerbils would exercise for very long periods of time in a wheel while some of them would ignore them.
For all gerbil cages, a 10-gallon aquarium or its equivalent of plastic or wire enclosure would normally be fine for a pair of gerbils. It would be good if it is larger so that they would get time to roam. You should ensure that the gerbil cages have a place to hang a water bottle as the use of a water dish would not work effectively. A clip or patch must be fashioned out in such a way that the gerbil cannot play with it and open it. Also the top of the gerbil cages or the entrance must always be secure. With a little nesting house made of wood or ceramic your gerbils would enjoy their time and this is better than the plastic ones which they may end up chewing.
